Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental health condition characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance, a deep need for admiration, and a lack of empathy for others. People with this disorder often have an exaggerated sense of their own abilities and achievements, and may be preoccupied with fantasies of success, power, beauty, or ideal love .

Symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder may include being overly boastful, exaggerating one’s own achievements, pretending to be superior to others, lack of empathy for others, looking down on others as inferior, monopolizing conversations, impatience, anger, unhappiness, depression or mood swings when criticized, easily disappointed when expected importance is not given, always craving for “the best” in everything and having a very fragile self-esteem.

The exact causes of narcissistic personality disorder are unknown but may include parenting style (either excessive pampering or criticism), genetic changes or changes in the structure or functioning of the brain. Risk factors may include family history of mental health disorders and unpleasant family life during childhood.

If untreated, complications of narcissistic personality disorder may include disturbance in social relationships at home, school and/or office; depression; drug and/or alcohol abuse; suicidal thoughts.

Diagnosis of narcissistic personality involves evaluation of medical history, physical examination and if necessary imaging tests. Psychotherapy is the first line of treatment. Medications may be prescribed to manage some of the symptoms.

Treating someone with narcissistic personality disorder can be challenging, but it is possible. Here are some tips that may help:

1. Encourage them to seek professional help: It is important to encourage the person to seek professional help from a psychologist or psychiatrist who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental illness. However, it is important to remember that people with narcissistic personality disorder may not believe they have a problem and may be resistant to seeking help.

2. Set boundaries: People with narcissistic personality disorder may have difficulty respecting other people's boundaries. It is important to set clear boundaries and stick to them. This can help prevent the person from taking advantage of you or others.

3. Avoid criticizing or blaming: People with narcissistic personality disorder may become defensive or angry if they feel criticized or blamed. It is important to avoid using accusatory language and instead focus on how their behavior affects you or others.

4. Be empathetic: People with narcissistic personality disorder may have difficulty understanding other people's feelings. It is important to be empathetic and try to understand their perspective.

5. Be patient: Treating narcissistic personality disorder can take time and patience. It is important to be patient and not expect immediate results.

6. Take care of yourself: Caring for someone with narcissistic personality disorder can be emotionally draining. It is important to take care of yourself and seek support from friends, family, or a therapist if needed.

If you are concerned about someone with narcissistic personality disorder, it is important to seek professional help as soon as possible. A mental health professional can provide an accurate diagnosis and develop a treatment plan tailored to the individual's needs.
